An island with a voice

Lefkada’s story reaches beyond its coastline. The poets Angelos Sikelianos and Aristotelis Valaoritis are part of its literary heritage. Lafcadio Hearn, born on the island, carried its name into a life and body of writing closely associated with Japan. Their paths offer another way to meet Lefkada: through words, memory and the places that shaped them.

A question from Homer

The archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld proposed that Lefkada was Homer’s Ithaca. His research around Nydri became part of the island’s archaeological story. The identification is a theory, rather than an established fact; its appeal lies in the conversation it opens between landscape and literature.

The theatre beneath the olive trees

Near the modern town, the ancient theatre on Koulmos adds another layer. Trial trenches were made in 1901 by E. Krüger, a collaborator of Dörpfeld. The site was located again in 1997; systematic excavation by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetolia-Acarnania and Lefkada began in 2017 under Dr Olympia Vikatou. An island, at your own pace

From Lygia, let curiosity shape a day beyond the house. A museum, a village, a walk through town: there is no need to see everything at once. Leave a little room for the island to reveal itself.
