An island of words & memory

Listen to
another Lefkada.

The island of Angelos Sikelianos and Aristotelis Valaoritis has a literary life woven into its sense of place. Lafcadio Hearn, born here, carried the name of Lefkada into a life and work closely connected with Japan.

Beyond the blue, there are voices, traditions and traces of earlier worlds. Let them shape a different kind of island day.

An island beyond the blue

Between history and imagination.

Wilhelm Dörpfeld’s research led him to propose Lefkada as Homer’s Ithaca. It remains a theory, a way of reading the landscape through one of the world’s oldest journeys home.

The ancient theatre on Koulmos, near modern Lefkada town, tells a more tangible story. E. Krüger, a collaborator of Dörpfeld, made trial trenches in 1901. The site was located again in 1997; systematic excavation began in 2017 under Dr Olympia Vikatou. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
